Before going to QLV I had never heard of the eye condition Keratoconus. I didn't know that it was a degenerative eye disease that results in blindness. I didn't know that there is no cure for the disease. I didn't know I have the disease, and I didn't know this disease excludes me from being a candidate for laser treatment. Upon going to my appointment at QLV on the 1st of June 2015 I was told all of these things in the course of a 10-15minute period and then sent on my way. I don't know how anyone else might take this news, but I didn't take it well. I felt extremely upset and overwhelmed, and although the doctor had mentioned a couple of treatment options to minimise the progression of the disease at the end of my appointment, I didn't hear or retain much information after I heard "you have an eye disease and it will make you go blind". It's now the 11th of August 2015 and I've had a couple of months to do some internet research on the disease and come to terms with the whole situation. After searching for doctors in Brisbane that specialize in Keratoconus treatment I decided to make an appointment to see one. When making the appointment I was asked if I have a referral letter in order to receive medicare benefits to which I replied that I don't have one but will try to get one. I then called QLV, explained my situation and asked if they could provide me a referral letter seeing as it was one of their doctors who diagnosed me with the disease. After being put on hold a number of times I was finally told "NO" they will not give me a referral as they had apparently given me a referral to one of their own "In house" doctors at the time of my initial consultation which I didn't even know about. I explained that I didn't know they had given a referral at the time of my consultation as I was completely overwhelmed at the news I had just been given at the time and queried why they wouldn't give me a referral now. They explained to me that I am free to go to which ever doctor I like, but they will only give referrals for their in house doctors because that is part of their business model and it is a decision solely based on money. I told them I am absolutely appalled at their treatment of my situation and that I think their practice of "Money first" is pathetic. Thanks for nothing QLV. I think your service is rubbish, and I will certainly be telling everyone I come across exactly what I think of your practices.
